The Power Packed Pomegranate! Ultra-Healthy and Delicious!

As we enter the season of colds and flues, there is no better natural substance than the pomegranate!  This strange fruit with red rough skin and packed with tiny ruby-red juicy seeds is loaded with anti-oxidant nutrients, which act as an excellent immune booster.  Drinking pomegranate juice at the onset of a cold is a great way to prevent it from getting worse.  The anti-inflammatory agents in pomegranate juice will also significantly reduce the soreness and redness of your sore throat.

Pomegranates are categorized as a “super food” because of their many health benefits.  Other agents found in pomegranate juice have been found to fight against the hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) by reducing the oxidation of the bad (LDL) cholesterol that clogs and clots and causes hardening of the arteries.  In fact studies have shown that regular consumption of pomegranates can actually reverse the progression of this disease, protecting and healing you from blood vessel damage.

As I researched further, I learned that other studies positively proved that pomegranates contain a powerful agent against cancer, such as breast cancer and especially prostate cancer.  The anti-oxidant content protects the cells from damage of free radicals, keeping cancer at bay.

Pomegranates are extremely low in calories and abundant in essential vitamins such as B and C.  It is also a great source of fiber which helps the digestive process and also providing relief for those suffering from diarrhea.  It lowers bold pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease because it’s very high in potassium.  But to get the maximum benefit of its potassium content it is suggested that you never heat the juice because it loses its properties.  Eating the raw fruit or juicing it is the best way to get the maximum health benefits from the fruits nutrients.  Even though pomegranate jelly is delicious, it’s not as good for you!

Other common ailments that are known to respond positively to the use of pomegranate or its juice include:
  • Asthma: because of the high content of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) acts as an anti-inflammatory which reduces the cause for wheezing

  • Anemia: especially good for women after loss of blood from menstruation

  • Loss of Appetite: drinking it can help increase your appetite

  • Dysentery: soothes pain of inflammation caused by this

  • Morning Sickness/Nausea: juice mixed with honey in equal parts relieves this.
Pomegranates grow best in hot dry climates.  It is the native fruit of the Middle East and its name is Latin for “apple with many seeds”.  You can find them growing in Arizona and California in the U.S. and they can be grown as trees or hedges.

Pomegranates are a great natural source of nutrients you cannot get from just vitamins.  Eat it and stay healthy and it will keep you young – literally, they are packed with anti-aging properties to keep your body and skin protected from free radicals!
